THE STORY:
Our original take on an old world recipe. Black + Blanco is the maker of the most uniquely delicious Moroccan-inspired shortbread cookies that you've never had.

Actually, the creation of our melt-in-your-mouth Sandcastles was quite the accident!

I played Jazz piano professionally in the NYC creative war-zone for over 15 years. Although it was beyond rewarding and inspiring in so many ways, I found myself up against a wall and at a major crossroads. I had to sell my piano, leave my apartment, minimize my existence and reexamine the life I had created since being on my own from age 17. I needed to make a change. As synchronicity would have it, I connected with Heidi (who was at a similar fork in the proverbial road) on all things earthly, other worldly, and universally unknown. Oh, and she also was impressed with the food items in my pantry so we were off to a pretty good start.

When I took Heidi down to Florida to meet my mom who greeted us with a plate of my most beloved childhood cookies, I never would have imagined it would lead us into the zany hijinks of starting our own company. You see, my mother is from Casablanca Morocco, and these are no ordinary cookies. In fact, when Heidi tasted the "sandie" (aka ghoriba), which is my all time favorite, she flipped out and suggested we make a "smart" version so we could eat them all the time. Utilizing organic ingredients we were both fond of such as virgin coconut oil (too many health benefits to list), whole grain rye, and a variety of seeds and spices, we set out to create adventurous flavor combinations to please our palates. After a year of unrelenting perseverance figuring it out, we finally arrived at our destination. The Sandcastle was unleashed! 

Fast-forward…In just over a year Black + Blanco Sandcastles are now sold at approximately 100 stores in select regions from New York to Los Angeles, and have garnered many accolades, much prestigious press and lots of smiles. We now have four exquisite varieties and are counting the minutes until our newest creations materialize.

Our operation is in New York City. The majority of our equipment, gear, utensils, etc are made in the USA, including special sheet pans manufactured in Pennsylvania. Our elegant packaging was designed by Leland Creative and is produced in Massachusetts. The box fits around our 8-cookie stack with NO wasteful space or filler, yet brings style and security to these precious biscuits. 

We can't even begin to express how gratifying this journey has been thus far.  Many thanks to our customers, retail partners, and all of the people we've met along the way. Your energy helps us overcome the challenges we face, and although this is only the beginning we already see it as a success!
